A Call to Action
Liberalism is a plague on American politics that has persisted for at least a hundred years. And by no means does the Democrat Party hold a monopoly on the destructive policies that liberalism entails. Sadly, too many who comprise current Republican Party leadership agree with Democrats that government can provide the solution to any and all problems that Americans face in their daily lives. Conservatives, like America's Founding Fathers, believe that such a government is the problem, and that a good government will get out of the way of American citizens and businesses so they can solve their own problems.
This web site is a reply to the Republican Party leadership that has spit in the face of fiscal conservatives by spending its way out of office. While many things can change between now and November, the current outlook for Republicans is bleak. They may deserve the shellacking they are poised to take, but the rest of us do not.
The Democrat socialist savages are knocking on the door of total control of American government. The hapless Republican Party, mired in a seemingly clueless stupor, has left a power vacuum that Democrats will be elated to fill.
I believe this is the closest that America has ever been to realizing perennial Socialist Party presidential candidate Norman Thomas’ great hope for the Left. He predicted that, “The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under the name of ‘liberalism’ they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program, until one day America will be a Socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.”
If it happens, we will also learn how right philosopher Ayn Rand was when she said, “The difference between a welfare state and a totalitarian state is a matter of time.”
The implosion of the Republican Party with its insistence upon steering a course near the “center of the road” has proven to be a disaster. Current Republican Party leaders have bought into this concept.
The problem is that what passes for the “center of the road” is a quarter inch from socialism and several miles from capitalism.
Newt Gingrich said conservatives should declare their independence from the Republican Party’s leadership. While I can't be certain about precisely what he has in mind, I have written such a declaration that you can read and sign on this site. I have composed it in the manner I believe Thomas Jefferson would have done if he were with us today - borrowing liberally from the Declaration he composed. My hope is that a large number of conservative activists will sign the Declaration. I will submit it to important Republican leaders to show them how important it is that they reform the Party. The more signitures I collect, the greater will be the impact of the document.
Make no mistake about it. Conservatives should continue to be Republicans, but should be dedicated to returning the Republican Party to its conservative roots. Time is long overdue to recast the Republican Party as the party of limited government and champion of free enterprise. Time is long overdue for conservatives to step up and say no to Republican Party leadership and to show them that, when they offer undesireable liberal candidates, we do have somewhere else to go. We can go to another city or legislative district to help conservative candidates. We can go to other campaigns to walk precincts or contribute money. We can recruit and support conservative candidates to oppose them. We can get elected to and take control of Republican Central Committees. We can write letters to the editor and editorials exposing them as liberals. We can declare our independence from the Republican Party and, in effect, go on strike!
My hope is that conservatives will rally one more time for the Party in November and start the rebuilding process on January 2, 2009 - the centennial of Barry Goldwater’s birth.
Please take the time to read and sign the Conservative Declaration of Independence.
